A reward chart can change what a child does without telling you why they did it. A child may put their shoes away because they want the next star, because the chart reminds them, because the routine is becoming familiar, or because all three things are happening at once.
So, do reward charts make children less motivated to do things on their own? Sometimes an expected, tangible reward can reduce later interest in an activity a child already enjoys. That pattern appears in several laboratory studies. But it does not show that a short home chart makes children dependent on rewards or less independent. A chart can be a reasonable temporary scaffold for one new, boring or necessary routine when the child understands the plan and you set a review date.
The useful question is not “Are rewards good or bad?” It is “What is this chart helping my child practise, and what should still work when the chart is gone?” If you are starting one, choose a familiar first action and a reachable first reward.
Compliance, self-initiation and enjoyment are different
Imagine a child who clears their plate whenever a star is available, but forgets when the chart is put away. The chart has probably changed compliance. It has not yet shown independent initiation.
Now imagine that the child starts clearing the plate after dinner without being asked, but says they dislike it. That is self-initiation without enjoyment. Another child may enjoy setting the table and do it without reminders, but still need help carrying the heavy dishes. Enjoyment, skill and independence can move separately.
Motivation studies often measure what happens after a reward is removed. Researchers leave a person alone with the activity and record whether they choose it again, or ask how interesting it felt. That is a useful test of free-choice interest. It is not a direct test of whether a child will remember a chore, understand a family responsibility or manage a morning routine at home.
What the studies found
One study involved 51 nursery-school children aged 3 to 5 who already chose drawing during classroom free play. Some were told in advance that they would receive an award for drawing. Others received the same award unexpectedly, or no award. One to two weeks later, the children could choose activities again. The expected-award group spent less free-play time drawing and received lower drawing-quality ratings. The unexpected-award and no-award groups did not show that drop. (Lepper, Greene and Nisbett, 1973)
That is evidence for a specific possibility: when a child already enjoys an activity, an announced prize can make the prize seem like the reason for doing it. It is not evidence that a sticker chart for putting laundry in a basket will reduce a child’s long-term independence.
A later study with 20-month-olds found that children who received a material reward while helping were less likely to help in a later test than children who received praise or no reward. (Warneken and Tomasello, 2008) Helping is a highly specific social task, and infants in a laboratory are not school-age children doing chores. It is a useful warning about putting a price on behaviour a child already offers freely, not a universal rule against encouragement.
A major review of 128 experiments found average reductions in later free-choice behaviour for rewards tied to engagement, completion or performance. The standardised effects were −0.40, −0.36 and −0.28 respectively, where a negative number means less later free-choice activity on average. Positive feedback increased free-choice behaviour and self-reported interest. The experiments used varied tasks and populations and were not household chart trials. (Deci, Koestner and Ryan, 1999)
Why the answer is disputed
Another research group reached a narrower conclusion. Cameron, Banko and Pierce’s review found that rewards were generally not harmful, could help with low-interest tasks, and showed negative effects mainly when a high-interest task had an expected tangible reward loosely tied to performance. They argued that rewards linked to a clear performance standard often increased or did not change later interest. (Cameron, Banko and Pierce, 2001)
An updated 2023 dissertation synthesis of 142 laboratory experiments also found the strongest negative pattern for expected tangible rewards, especially in children, but found little overall effect on self-reported interest. The effects varied widely between studies. (Lehtivuori, 2023)
The disagreement is not a minor detail. It means you should be wary of both slogans: “rewards always ruin motivation” and “rewards never matter.” The studies use different tasks, reward types, ages and measures. Most do not resemble a parent teaching a routine in a busy home.
What home studies can tell us
Home evidence shows why the blanket answer fails. In a randomised trial, 173 families with 3- to 4-year-olds offered a disliked vegetable for 12 daily tastes. Children receiving a sticker for tasting increased intake and liking more than the no-treatment group, with differences still present three months later. Praise alone did not differ significantly from control. (Wardle et al., 2012) The sticker was paired with repeated exposure to something unfamiliar, not with an activity children already loved.
An older applied study taught parents of six children aged 5 to 11 to run point systems for defined chores and problem behaviours. The target behaviours improved while the system was active. In one family, chores fell when points were removed and rose when they were reinstated. (Christophersen et al., 1972) That shows a point system can change behaviour. It does not show that the children had internalised the routine.
Use the traffic-light test
Green: a short chart may be reasonable
- Choose one action that is visible and learnable, such as putting shoes in the basket after school.
- Make sure your child can do it with the help you have agreed. Teach missing steps first.
- Let the child help choose a small, reachable experience, such as choosing the family film.
- Add the star soon after the action and name what earned it.
- Set a review date. Keep earned stars and separate safety boundaries from the chart.
This matches practical guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics, which recommends specific goals, child-selected rewards, no demerits and gradual phase-out.
Yellow: redesign before adding a bigger prize
Be cautious if your child already loves the activity, helps spontaneously, or is being asked to perform creatively, kindly or competitively for a prize. Also pause if the target says “be good,” the reward is distant, or the chart judges quality rather than recording a clear action. Shrink the task, offer a choice, teach the skill, and use specific social feedback.
Red: stop and look for the unmet need
Pause when the chart creates shame, sibling comparison, daily bargaining or repeated conflict. The child may need a smaller demand, skill teaching or support rather than another incentive. Action for Children advises using charts for a specific situation with an end date and stopping when the approach is not helping. A chart cannot explain behaviour that is communicating distress. Talk with a health or education professional if the problem persists or involves safety.
Run a fade test
When the routine is reliable, do not wait for the chart to become a permanent scoreboard. The CDC recommends stopping rewards as the behaviour becomes frequent, while the AAP recommends gradual phase-out. Keep specific acknowledgement, but give stars less often: every second or third opportunity, then occasionally. Remove the chart and watch what happens after an ordinary cue.
If the routine slips, restore a small reminder or a brief chart. If a chart worked and then stopped, compare the last successful week with the current one and test one change across five opportunities. Do not respond by making the prize larger or the finish line farther away. Never erase an earned star because of a different problem later.
Paul Bright, who built Star Rewards, puts the test this way: “I think a good chart is one you eventually throw away.” Remove the chart when the action is reliable, then see whether your child starts after the ordinary cue without waiting for a star.
